Opis

In 2015, a significant research initiative was launched by the Polish Institute of World Art Studies in partnership with the National Museum in Kraków, the National Museum in Warsaw, and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. This ambitious five-year study focused on Henryk Siemiradzki, a renowned Polish painter known for his connections to Russian and Italian art communities. The project received funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, under the "National Programme for the Development of the Humanities." It culminated in the publication of a comprehensive two-volume catalogue titled "Henryk Siemiradzki: Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings," which includes his paintings, sketches, and studies in oil. A crucial goal of the project was to compile all known and documented works by Siemiradzki, verified through sketches, graphic reproductions, and archival photos, and confirmed by technical analysis. The Catalogue Raisonné provides a bibliography, exhibition histories, letters, and sources for each painting, assessing its context within Siemiradzki's oeuvre and the artistic movements of the time. The catalogue is organized thematically, covering historical scenes, religious depictions, genre compositions, ceiling paintings, theatrical curtains, portraits, and landscapes. Additionally, it offers a chronological overview of his works.

In addition to the catalogue, a third volume, "Głosy o twórczości Henryka Siemiradzkiego" (Voices on the Work of Henryk Siemiradzki), written in Polish, provides archival sources, a bibliography, and studies of the artist's work. The fourth volume, "Warsztat malarski Henryka Siemiradzkiego" (Painting Techniques, Materials, and Creative Process of Henryk Siemiradzki), also in Polish, delves into the technical aspects and methods of Siemiradzki's art. The project also included a compilation of his correspondence and investigations into media, catalogues, and other publications. Findings have been disseminated in four volumes resulting from international conferences, held in cities such as Warsaw in 2017 and Kraków and Rome in 2018. This endeavor not only enhances the understanding of Siemiradzki's work but also offers insightful perspectives on Polish and European art from the latter half of the 19th century.
