Zygmunt Jatczak was a celebrated figure, renowned for his service with the Polish Home Army and the French Foreign Legion. He played a significant role in the Warsaw Uprising as a member of the “Miotła” Battalion and subsequently served in the Thirteenth Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion in Indochina. His exceptional courage and dedication earned him numerous honors, including the Cross of Valor for his actions during the Warsaw Uprising and the Military Medal (Médaille militaire) for his contributions in Indochina. After returning to Poland, he settled in the northern part of the country and became an honorary member of the Association of Former Soldiers and Friends of the Foreign Legion in Poland. Between 2009 and 2014, Jatczak's memoirs were compiled and published in a book. In recognition of his extraordinary service, he was appointed as a Knight (Chevalier) of the Legion of Honor by the French President on April 3, 2017. The decoration ceremony was held on July 7, 2017, at the Town Hall in Olsztynek. Colonel Roland Delawarde, the defense attaché at the French Embassy and a fellow veteran of the French Foreign Legion, had the honor of presenting the award on behalf of France's president.
