Over a century has passed since the faeries vanished abruptly, much like passing through an unseen gate. Only the extremely hopeful or naive still anticipated their comeback. In the aftermath of World War I, enchantment seemed all but extinct. Mouse Dunne had once aspired to study faeries as an anthropologist, but a single telegram changed her plans forever. Her cousin Bertie vanished during the Battle of the Somme, swallowed by the muddy fields, and her brother Roger returned deeply traumatized by the horrors of war. Mouse realized it was time to abandon her youthful ambitions.
However, everything shifts when Mouse learns that her uncle has bequeathed her Thistlemarsh Hall, a dilapidated estate in rural England, famously touched by the blessing of the Faerie King in days gone by. There's a condition attached, though: Mouse must restore the manor within a month, or she risks losing her inheritance and the means to care for her brother. The task seems insurmountable, until an enigmatic Faerie offers assistance. Despite knowing the risk of trusting a Faerie—especially one so unbearably charming and proud—Mouse finds herself with no other recourse. She must contend with the mystical powers inhabiting the estate and address her own past traumas, or face losing everything she holds dear.
