Long before Smith dealt with matters in Belfast, Mark Randall was found dead in a field close to Lowacre. By the time Smith returned to his duties, the investigation into Randall's death was already in progress. Although Smith repeatedly insists, "It's not my case," he is nonetheless drawn into the situation due to his innate curiosity and professional responsibility. As he navigates the rural landscape of Norfolk, interacting with local farmers and the Brothers of St Francis from Abbeyfields, Smith develops a sense that the investigation might be taking the wrong path. With arrests made and charges filed, Christopher Waters poses a critical question to Smith about whether he has ever observed an innocent person wrongly convicted of murder.
