Sadie Smith, a 34-year-old American working as an undercover agent known for her aggressive strategies and outspoken nature, is dispatched by her secretive and influential employers to a secluded area in France. Her task is to penetrate a community of radical activists, all under the sway of a mysterious leader named Bruno Lacombe. Despite her confidence in manipulating those she observes, Sadie finds herself entangled in a struggle between history and what lies ahead.
