Few things are as enigmatic as the human soul. In a quaint Hungarian town, Magda, a writer, meets her housekeeper, Emerence. Magda is relatively new to the area, while Emerence is a longstanding and formidable presence in the community, familiar with everyone and everything around her. Despite being able to come and go from Magda’s home as she likes, Emerence keeps her own residence shrouded in mystery, with its door firmly shut to outsiders. Over the span of two decades, a deeply personal trust, enriched by unspoken secrets, forms between them. However, this delicate bond is shattered one fateful afternoon, leaving their intricate relationship irreparably changed. Consequently, Magda is left to grapple with a lingering sense of unease for the rest of her life. As it turns out, some mysteries are better left undisturbed. Dubbed a "dark domestic fairy tale" by the New York Times, this tale was translated by Len Rix.
