Over several decades, Nobuyoshi Araki has captured an extensive collection of images, which have now been condensed into a 512-page photographic exploration, personally curated by the artist. Originally released as a Limited Edition and now reintroduced to commemorate TASCHEN’s 40th anniversary, this compilation takes an in-depth look at Araki's most iconic works. The book showcases a variety of subjects including the bustling streets of Tokyo, expressive faces, enticing food, vivid and sensual flowers, female nudity, and the traditional Japanese practice of kinbaku, or bondage. These images reveal a play between dominance and freedom, life and longing, and challenge the viewer with their juxtaposition of calm and shock value. Araki describes his bondage photographs as "a collaboration between the subject and the photographer," aiming to deepen his connection with the women he photographs. His work, particularly among Japanese women, has achieved a legendary status, offering them a sense of liberation as he captures their expressions of desire.
