When a worker disappears from a North Sea gas platform, the initial theories suggest it could either be an unfortunate accident or suicide. However, Smith and his team soon uncover that James Bell lived a secretive dual existence back onshore in Kings Lake, one complex enough to have potentially made a significant enemy. As the investigation unfolds, Smith has to assemble a new team, including Waters and Murray, while integrating a detective from Wilson’s squad and managing unexpected challenges from a female detective constable newly assigned from Longmarsh. Their inquiry explores the connections among the companies and individuals responsible for bringing oil and gas ashore, as they navigate the darker aspects of Lake's daily life. Concurrently, the inquisitive writer Jo Evison digs deeper into the Andretti murder case, while Smith faces the uncomfortable possibility of being considered unfit for duty.
