When their father departs with two mysterious men one evening, the world of Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis is turned upside down. Forced to leave their comfortable home in London, they relocate with their mother to a modest cottage in the countryside. To support the family, their mother turns to writing. Despite these challenges, the children quickly develop an affection for the nearby railway, eagerly waving to the Old Gentleman who regularly travels on the train. They strike up a friendship with Perks, the porter, who shares with them his knowledge of the railway and its many secrets. Numerous adventures unfold, including a heroic act where they avert a potential train catastrophe. This brave deed catches the attention of the Old Gentleman, who ultimately assists them in unraveling the mystery behind their father's sudden disappearance, leading to a joyful family reunion.
